According to both organizations, the basketball backboard must be a flat, transparent board that is 6 feet wide. The NBA allows only one height, 3 1/2 feet. However, although the NCAA regulations favor a 3 1/2-foot height, 4 feet is allowed.

The dimension requirements listed by the NBA, NCAA and High School are all the same. The regulation size for a basketball backboard is 42" tall x 72" wide. However, a 48" tall backboard is also permissible.
One of the most important things you will need to consider is what size backboard you will need for your new basketball court. Backboard sizes vary in width from 48” wide all the way up to 72”, but for the sake of regular game play we recommend choosing backboard no smaller than 54” wide. Anything narrower than this measurement won’t allow the player to perform bank shots at all!

Dimensions. According to Section II of the National Basketball Association rule book, a transparent backboard must be marked with a 2-inch-wide white rectangle centered behind the ring. The rectangle must have outside dimensions of 24 inches horizontally and 18 inches vertically. The base of the rectangle must be level with the basketball ring.
Standard basketball hoops under 300 are 6 feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall. All basketball rims (hoops) are 18 inches in diameter. The inner square on the backboard is 24 inches wide by 18 inches tall.
